Every Tuesday!!! 6:30 to 7:30
In our self-erasing American society, where we have no past unless we invent a nostalgic history to sell things, such as the idea of Ronald Reagan’s essential kindness….our 14 week old recitation of the Bill of Rights into cellphones down in the PATH station at the NE corner of Ground Zero feels as if it started back at the Boston Tea Party.  It’s been a long while now.
And we’ve had Tuesdays with 10 people and we’ve had a couple hundred, but always the words stayed the same, yes the Constitution is the American past that MUST KEEP BEING FORCED INTO THE PRESENT.
We always start at 6:30 on Tuesday eve and finish at 7:00 sharp. The police come and go,  but we seem to be arrest-proof.  We recite the below beautiful sentence into our cells, walking alongside the commuters who ignore us or listen surreptitiously or openly, and then we go home with the strange strength in us of those five freedoms that we have spoken again and again.
Here they are:
“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof;
or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press;
or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.”
