Womens Creative Collective, presents the 2008 New York Arab and
South Asian Film Festival including over 65 feature premieres,
documentaries and short films from 25 countries in North Africa, the
Middle East, South Asia, Europe, and North America. See

THEMATIC HIGHLIGHTS
*Representations of Belly Dancing in Egyptian Cinema, a selection of
films from 1950s-1970s curated and introduced by Columbia University
Professor Joseph Massad.
*A Mid-Career Retrospective & Free Master-class with Camera d’Or
winning Indian Director Murali Nair at Columbia University
* FREE Art Video Programs on Tuesday, March 11 at Art in General
presented by guest- curators Özkan Cangüven, and Swati Khurana.
* On the Edge of Imperialism: an Experimental Video Program curated
by filmmaker Tala Hadid

* Two Work in Progress screenings & discussions on March 5th of Jawad
Metni’s LEBANON CLUSTER BOMB at Cantor Film Center and Ayreen Anastas
and Rene Gabri’s WHAT EVERYBODY KNOWS on March 6 at the Pioneer.
* March 7th OPENING NIGHT screening at Tribeca Cinemas of the
documentary I LOVE HIP HOP IN MOROCCO. Director Joshua Asen will be
in attendance, and keep your ticket stubs for free entry to
after-party at Art in General. Open Bar & dj take 5 spinning hiphop,
nu-jazz, soulful grooves -sponsored by Earseph Enterprises.
* Book reception with Prof. HAMID DABASHI for his recent publication
Makhmalbaf at Large: The Making of a Rebel Filmmaker following the
March 9th screening of Hana Makhmalbaf’s BUDDHA COLLAPSED OUT OF
SHAME
*Festival GALA on March 14, and Closing weekend screenings, with many
international guests including: Syrian-American producer Malek Akkad,
Tunisian film star, ANISSA DAOUD, Egyptian Filmmaker, HALA KHALIL,
Syrian Filmmaker ABDELLATIF ABDULHAMID, Tunisian Writer/Director,
JILANI SAADI, and Moroccan director Daoud Aoulad-Syad among many
other curators, celebrities and filmmakers.
