Harvestworks is pleased to present an evening of Fluxus “Event Score” performances, both recent and historical works by Alison Knowles, Joe Jones, Larry Miller and Dick Higgins.
For this occasion, the scores will be performed by Alison Knowles and Larry Miller, the original Fluxus artists working together with a new generation of artists including Music Boxes by Children, turntables by Taketo Shimada and “Wired” Scissors by Nelson/Electric Chaircut.
Fluxus is a loosely affiliated international network of visual artists, new-music composers, writers, and performers who have been active since the early 1960s and have produced many festivals of new, experimental music and other avant-garde performance.
Fluxus Event Scores, involve simple actions, ideas, and objects from everyday life recontexualized as performance. Event Scores are texts that can be seen as proposal pieces or instructions for actions. The idea of the score suggests musicality. Like a musical score, Event Scores can be realized by artists other than the original creator and are open to variation and interpretation.
FLUXSWEET will include:
PLAY PAPER by Alison Knowles (2003), FINGER EXERCISE by Larry Miller (1982), FLUX MUSIC BOX by Joe Jones (1966), DANGER MUSIC #2 by Dick Higgins (1961), NIVEA CREAM by Alison Knowles (1962)
This performance event also marks the return of Fluxus sound pieces to Harvestworks, who produced a seminal FluxTellus on cassette (edited by Barbara Moore) and TellusTools on vinyl Lp. TellusTools will be used and abused to perform some of the pieces and will be available for purchase after the performance.
