Marco Brambilla: Halflife
October 2- December 7, 2003
Italian-born artist and filmmaker Marco Brambilla takes the wildly popular video game Counter-Strike as the subject of his exhibition, HalfLife, which will be on view in the Zenith Media Lounge. In Counter-Strike, users log on simultaneously to play against each other on one of two teams: terrorists and counter-terrorists. Brambilla takes us physically and psychologically inside a cyber-cafe in Garden Grove, Orange County (a town that boasts the largest number of cyber-cafe’s in the U.S.), presenting close-ups of the players’ faces while they are absorbed in the game, as well as edited footage from the game itself and surveillance-style imagery of the cyber-cafe. Halflife is organized by guest curator Anne Ellegood.
Zenith Media Lounge is a digital and media art technology collaboration with Zenith Electronics Corporation. Zenith Media Lounge exhibitions and public programs are supported by the Rockefeller Brothers Fund, the Jerome Foundation and the New York State Council on the Arts.
