BRONX RIVER ART CENTER PRESENTS
Recuento De Mis 15
Performance by Nicolás Dumit Estévez
FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 13, 7pm
(Rescheduled due to the blizzard in December)
Bronx, NY. On Friday, February 13, 2004 at 7 PM the Bronx River Art
Center (BRAC) will present a multi-media performance by Nicolás Dumit
Estévez. Formatted as a traditional Latino quince años, a
coming-of-age-ceremony in which girls formally celebrate their transition
to womanhood, this piece consists of an extensive audio-visual presentation
performed collaboratively by an artist, a curator, a gallery coordinator, a
flower girl, a theremin (An electronic instrument played by moving the
hands near its two antennas, often used for high tremolo effects.) player,
a waiter and a group of invited curators.
Recuento de mis 15 looks at professional roles and questions the
established art world’s methods of validating an artist’s work. Those
present are invited to delve simultaneously into the private and the
public, the institutional and the personal, and the ambiguity of what is
real and what is staged. Guests at this event get an inside look at
Estévez’s upbringing as well as his education, exhibitions, awards,
residencies and rejection letters through a presentation that includes
detailed projections of his five-page resume.
Nicolás Dumit Estévez is an interdisciplinary artist working primarily in
performance art. His work has been exhibited in New York at P.S.1/MoMA, El
Museo del Barrio, The Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, Henry Street
Settlement/Abrons Arts Center, the Bronx Museum of the Arts, the Queens
Museum of Art, The Newark Museum, Dixon Place, P.S.122, Exit Art, DCTV and
Smack Mellon, and at the Museo de Arte Moderno and Museo del Hombre
Dominicano in the Dominican Republic. He has been part of The National
