NK Arts Benefit Concert:
New York Premier of Brilliant Vocalist from Armenia: Lilit Pipoyan
New York, NY – January 3, 2004 —NK Arts today announced its upcoming benefit concert
premiering another national treasure from Armenia vocalist Lilit Pipoyan . An
internationally acclaimed artist, Ms. Pipoyan will perform her original and adapted
medieval Armenian compositions on piano and guitar, accompanied by a chamber
quartet. The concert takes place on one night only: Tuesday February 17, 7:30 PM,
at the NYU Kimmel Center (60 Washington Square and La Guardia Place).
Born in Yerevan to a family of artists, Lilit Pipoyan is a graduate of the
Spendaryan music school and has a Ph.D. in the Theory and History of Armenian
Architecture. Lilit’s compositions are based on Armenian secular songs from the
Middle Ages, for which she creates modern arrangements or, when the originals are
lost, melodies with distinctively native character. She has recorded three CDs and
has performed in Europe, the Middle East and the United States.
Organized in collaboration with the NY ASA and the NYU Armenian Club, the event also
features the award winning YY Sisters. This young a cappella trio (Lucine, Tatevik,
and Sona Yeghiazaryan) has been performing professionally since 1999. The YY Sisters
have participated in several festivals including Sayat Nova. Their favorite composer
is Gomidas.
Proceeds from the benefit concert will go toward the permanent development of
Karabagh’s historic landmark, the ancient fortress of Shushi— also the official site
of the annual NK Arts Festival. The site includes a dilapidated children’s
playground and a rundown public park, a destroyed open air theater and an abandoned
café. When these spaces are refurbished and restored, the community will have the
resources to help put Karabagh on the cultural map of the world.
Tikets are $50 (Front/Center Orchestra) and $25 (Rear Orchestra/Balcony). 10%
discount available for ten or more tickets purchased in advance. All tickets
purchaced by February 6 are tax deductible. Checks, payble to NYFA, can be mailed
to: NK Arts, 1369 Madison Ave # 112, New York, NY 10128. For additional information
