Since last December, the Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund
(AALDEF), has been providing legal advice to over 800 men from countries
mandated to report under the National Security Entry-Exit Registration System or Special Registration. It targets men and male youth from 24 Muslim countries and North Korea, requiring them to appear for fingerprinting, questioning, and removal. AALDEF has been providing legal representation to members of the South Asian, Arab, Indonesian and North Korean communities through free legal clinics and phone consultations.
Currently, we are documenting AALDEF’s work around Special Registration.
It requires us to call back individuals who contacted us to obtain legal
advice. We are looking for volunteers to assist us in doing these callbacks
to the special registration clients. If you speak Urdu/Hindi, Bangla,
Arabic, or Indonesian, and can would be interested in assisting us with this
project, please contact Krittika Ghosh at kghosh@aaldef.org or at 212 966 6030 x201 by June 23. We will need volunteers to come in during weekdays, after work hours, and during some weekends. We appreciate any time you can devote to this project over the next month, even if it is just a couple of hours a week.
Volunteers will be trained for the purposes of the callback and given background information on the project.
