Creative Insecurity, a SAVAC investigative exhibition
Call for Artist Submissions: Deadline Friday, May 14, 2004
All artists are welcome to apply.
Creative insecurity is an investigative exhibition by SAVAC which seeks to delve
into the sources of and responses to our sense of security.
What does it mean to be secure in the world? With the dawn of the 21st century, new
technologies and terrorist threats provide fertile ground for creating Creative
insecurity. Some of the strategies for successful Creative insecurity are:
1) The division of the world into the axis of good and evil.
2) A policy of automatic detention of so-called terrorists which ignores the
criminal-law principle “innocent unless proven guilty.”
3) Support of an Immigration
Act that relies on the “guilty unless proven innocent” principle.
4) The insistent, simple, yet sinister request “where do you come from?”
5) An increase in covert and overt surveillance of our private lives from insidious
data collection through credit card rewards programs to photo radar on our daily
commute.
6) The proliferation of identity thieves on the internet and spying software on
anyone’s hard drive.
The list goes on (Add your own observations). How do we as individuals, a community,
and a nation respond and react to these challenges. Artists are invited to submit
artworks in any media that critique, reflect upon, undermine, and re-interpret the
strategies of Creative insecurity and its impact on our sense of security.
Creative insecurity will take place from August 6 – 8, 2004 as part of the Masala!
Mehndi! Masti! Festival where over 30, 000 guests attend.

SAVAC is a Toronto-based, artist-run, nonprofit organization dedicated to the
development and presentation of new works in contemporary visual art by artists of
South Asian origin. SAVAC does not have a permanent gallery. As a collective, we
produce exhibitions, an international lecture series, and educational projects in
collaboration with artist-run-centres, museums, educational institutions and
community organizations to integrate South Asian artists in the contemporary art
sector. SAVAC pays CARFAC artist fees and our programming is supported by the Canada
Council for the Arts, Ontario Arts Council, Toronto Arts Council, our patrons and
members.
Your submission must include:
1) one page artist statement and/or description of the artwork you would like to
exhibit.
2) CV, Resume or biography
3) support material (see below)
4) membership application and fee (SAVAC membership info available at www.savac.net)
Support material (please do not send originals):
Images of the artwork you would like to exhibit in Creative insecurity
(example: drawings/photographs/photocopies/slides/ VHS tape/CD/website)
Slides (max 10, labeled with artist’s name, title, medium, dimensions)
VHS tape (labeled with artist’s name, cued at the start point)
Audio CD or Tape (labeled with artist’s name and list of tracks to be played)
You may also send images of your past work to support your proposal
