NEW YORK, March 1 /PRNewswire/ — Paul Auster, Michael Cunningham, Jennifer Egan, Dave Eggers, Jonathan Franzen, Gary Indiana, Jhumpa Lahiri, Joyce Carol Oates, Jonathan Safran Foer, Susan Sontag, and Colson Whitehead will present new fiction works on Thursday, March 25th at Where’s My Democracy, the literary event of the year, in support of Downtown For Democracy (D4D). The evening will also feature several special guest readers, including Lou Reed.

This marathon evening of readings will be held at Cooper Union’s historic Great Hall, a mecca for progressive political debate for almost 150 years. In addition to presenting ten-minute fiction shorts, each writer has contributed to Sometimes Small Statements Make a Big Difference, a limited edition box of signed broadsides designed by Patrick Li and with a silkscreened cover by Paul Sahre documenting this landmark reading. An affordable pocket-sized edition will also be available.
D4D is a political action committee that engages America’s creative community in the democratic process. We transform our community’s cultural influence into political power: money, visibility, and votes, and strategically “spend” these assets to educate, register, and mobilize voters and to support candidates committed to individual liberty, social justice, and participatory democracy. D4D’s focus this year is on mobilizing voters in order to defeat George Bush. Money raised from the reading will support organizing efforts in two key swing states, Ohio and Pennsylvania, through voter registration drives and truthful political advertising, among other activities.
Throughout this critical election year, Downtown For Democracy will stage a suite of events including a swing state concert tour, a modern design auction, and a non-fiction reading series.
D4D has had remarkable success motivating creative communities. D4D’s first event, an art auction held at Phillips, de Pury and Luxembourg in November 2003 drew 800 people and raised more than $150,000. It featured over 70 contemporary artists including Kara Walker, Sofia Coppola, Philip-Lorca di Corcia, Fred Tomaselli, Richard Prince, and Tom Sachs. The event attracted a noteworthy rate of first-time political contributions: more than 80% of art buyers and 95% of ticket buyers had never before contributed to a national political campaign.
