The London Hanged has been widely praised as an exemplary, trail-blazing, and indispensable history of crime and society in the eighteenth century and of the rise of capitalism generally. Its highly original and provocative analysis of the links between new forms of private property and the criminalization of the poor, illustrated by the public hangings at the Tyburn gallows, has made it a broad and powerful model for understanding globalization and local struggles from Nigeria to Indonesia today. The London Hanged is a prime example of the crucial importance of history for a fuller, richer awareness of the latest current events.
To celebrate the publication of a new edition of The London Hanged, several distinguished scholars will discuss both the historical and contemporary importance of this classic text.
Participating in the panel will be Peter Linebaugh, author and Assistant Professor of History at the University of Toledo; Robin Blackburn, one of Britain’s foremost social historians; Eric Foner, DeWitt Clinton Professor of History at Columbia; Michael Ratner, President of the Center for Constitutional Rights; and moderated by Robin Kelley, Chair of the Department of History at New York University. The event is free and open to the public.
