16 Beaver is the address of a space initiated/run by artists since 1999. Since that time, it has served as place where those involved in art, politics, education, as well as a multiplicity of other contexts and fields of activity could discover and develop a common place to share research, questions, understandings, concerns, and struggles. Thus, it has been an open place to share, present, produce, and discuss a variety of artistic/cultural/economic/political projects. It has also been a site where discussions can lead to actions and action can be discussed and rethought.

In 15 years of existence, we have managed to do what we do, without any funding. 4 years ago, we had a problem with our lease which required us to ask friends and people who support the space to donate money. We raised a modest sum and so continue to maintain the space for people to donate to the space. Whenever someone wants to support the space with money, they can do so with a tax-deductable donation. No one gets paid for the work we do, we do it out of commitment and conviction and desire. Whatever money that does come in, goes toward maintaining the space online and materially.

Since 1999, the Reading Group at 16Beaver has organized presentations, readings, discussions, screenings, and panels with/by artists, curators, thinkers, writers, and activists.
Monday nights have been an evening to share time and generate discussions, links, ideas. Meetings usually begin at 7pm and the location is almost always at 16Beaver Street, 4th Floor.
Of course after 4 or 5 years, Monday became Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday or any day which seemed appropriate. And events, seminars, walks, activities have also been organized in different cities. The initiative for all events comes from people who become involved in the space and from friends or people we are interested in, who are visiting the city.

16BEAVER is an independent collectively-sustaining project. The Residents of the space maintain the space by using it as their place of work/work/activities.

A big part of 16BEAVER happens through our mailing lists and blogs. In order to help create a more interesting future, we need to be connected. Each list includes different features and goals.

GENERAL LIST:
This is our original or “classic” list. It includes materials submitted to us by subscribers which are original (Journalisms)or taken off the net (ARTicles + Links). It also includes a description of any event which we organize in New York or elsewhere. This list can get active but is usually sent out 1-2 times a week.
To subscribe to the general mailing list, you will need to email by writing to the following address. general-join followed by “@” then 16beavergroup.org. We have typed it this way to avoid spam subscriptions.
To unsubscribe from the list you can do the opposite from above. So you write an email to general-leave@16beavergroup.org.
