“>FROM THE DREAM LIFE:
AMERICAN MOVIES + THE MYTHOLOGY OF THE 1960s
Coinciding with the release of Village Voice senior film critic
J.Hoberman’s new book, The Dream Life: Movies, Media, and the
Mythology of the Sixties (The New Press), Moving Image presents
a three-week series, curated by Hoberman. On Saturday, Hoberman
will introduce Stanley Kubrick’s DR. STRANGELOVE and sign copies
of his book afterwards. Also on Saturday, Direct Cinema landmark
PRIMARY reveals JFK’s star power and the intensity of the 1960
presidential race. John Frankenheimer’s SEVEN DAYS IN MAY, with
a Rod Serling screenplay, unfolds a tale of an American coup in
hyperrealistic style, anchored by Burt Lancaster’s bravura
performance. Sam Peckinpah’s MAJOR DUNDEE stars Charlton Heston
in the title role as the megalomaniacal major heading across the
Mexican border to catch Indian raiders. The film will be
preceded by CHOICE, a controversial 1968 Republican campaign
film showing America as a nightmare of depravity ruled by a
brazen Texan. Arthur Penn’s THE CHASE, with Marlon Brando, Jane
Fonda, and Robert Redford, receives a rare 35mm screening. Based
on a novel by Horton Foote, Penn’s film stars Redford as a
prison escapee with lots of enemies in a small Texas town.
