Death and the Polity
A lecture by Gregg Bordowitz
Friday November 19, 6:30pm
The Driscoll Room, 51 Astor Place
The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art
The Irwin S. Chanin School of Architecture and the Whitney Museum of American Art Independent Study Program are pleased to present a lecture by writer, film and video maker Gregg Bordowitz.
This lecture will address the structuring role of death underlying current aspects of daily social life. It will consider how mortification in art and culture can pose a response to the fear of death repressively exercised in the name of security.
Closely reading the book of Jonah as a starting point, the talk will encompass works of poetry, music and video to ask this question: How can we comprehend the collective social dimensions of the hidden constitutional ambivalence that functions at the very core of each individual’s
emotional life?
