by William Nessen

******************************
William Nessen, an American activist in the independence struggles in East
Timor and then Acheh, shot much of this extraordinary film while he was
living and traveling with the Free Acheh Movement (GAM) as it was engaged in
armed struggle. Nessen was eventually hunted down by the Indonesian
military, nearly killed, imprisoned, and thrown out of Acheh. We also see
and hear about the mass civil society movements of students, women, farmers,
fisherpeople and more, who transformed the entire country into an
independence movement for several years.
SPECIAL GUEST: Shadia Marhaban
An Achenese civil society activist who is featured in “The Black Road,”
Shadia Marhaban will answer questions and update us on events in Acheh since
the August 2005 peace accord that ended the fighting. She has been involved
in creating a women’s organization that has 30,000 members, and in
December’s historic election of former independence activists to regional
offices.
Free admission — open discussion.
