1. Introduction
What are the ultimate ingredients for a better society?
To have a good amount of Social Security and be capable of Eating Capital
or to have good Social Capital and be capable of Eating Security.
We thought the second is best, this is why we are organizing this two
part event. The first on Thursday is a party-like preparation baking
event and the second on Friday is the lunch time to eat security with
special guest Joshua Kinberg who will be demonstrating two of his
interventions.

4. Lunchtime‚s Special Guest 1:00 pm Demonstrations by Joshua Kinberg
At the lunch Joshua Kinberg will demonstrate two works : Shoebox
Projector and Bikes Against Bush.
Below are short descriptions
Title: Shoebox Projector
Shoebox Projector is a prototype device intended for disposable culture
jamming. The device, inspired by the Hactivist Flashpoint
(http://www.hactivist.com/flashpoint/), consists of a series of
disposable cameras that have been transformed into do-it-yourself
projectors. The device subtly blends into the urban environment, where it
can repeatedly insert subversive messages onto any dark surface. I want
to make this device more efficient, cost effective to produce, and
scalable so that it can easily incorporate a multiplicity of cameras.
Upon further development, I will mass-produce devices (with the help of
various activist groups), and then distribute them throughout the city
for their dissemination of counter-messages to the RNC.
Title: Bikes Against Bush
Bikes Against Bush transforms ordinary bicycles into Internet-enabled,
tactical media Œweapons‚ for non-violent, creative resistance to the 2004
Republican National Convention in NYC. Bikes Against Bush uses wireless
bicycles that incorporate a mechanical printing device
consisting of a series of spray-chalk aerosol cans. This mechanical
ChalkWriter can print text messages from web users to the street
surfaces on which the bike cruises. Online users can send messages to the
bicycle in real-time through the project website,
bikesagainstbush.com, and the cyclist can decide when and where to print
them. When the cyclist prints a message, bikesagainstbush.com
automatically updates a live map marking the location of the message. A
webcam on the bike also documents this with a snapshot at the moment of
printing. The spray-chalk text message remains on the street for 4 to 5
days till the chalk biodegrades. Thus, the goal of Bikes Against Bush is
to serve as an inspirational and working model for alternative, creative
political resistance.

5. About Joshua Kinberg
Joshua Kinberg is a multimedia artist and activist. He works with the
convergence of cyberspace and real space, and is interested in social
networks, contagious media, and wireless communities.
In 2002, Joshua designed and programmed the notorious website
BlackPeopleLoveUs.com. Within a few weeks, the satirical site about
subtle forms of racism received over a million unique visits, and was
covered in the mass media by the New York Times, Good Morning America,
Black Entertainment Television (BET), and National Public Radio (NPR). He
has been an instructor at Parsons School of Design and at Eyebeam where
he recently taught a course on civil disobedience, cyberactivism, and
moblogging. He is currently an MFA candidate in the Design and Technology
program at Parsons School of Design. His master’s thesis seeks to develop
tactical media interventions in resistance to the 2004 Republican
National Convention in NYC.

6. About ŒSocial Capitalˆ Forms of Interaction‚ Whitney ISP Exhibition
the Whitney Independent Study Program Exhibition this year entitled „
Social Capital ˆ Forms of Interaction‰ is curated by Howie Chen, Leta
Ming, Allison Moore, and Nadia Perucic.
The exhibition brings together contemporary artists who make the
complexities of social relations the subject, material or form of their
work. Responding to contemporary societal conditions, some artists
consider the influence of new technologies on human connections, while
some explore the effects of cultural difference and geo-politics. Others
orchestrate situations in which viewers interact directly with the
artwork or with one another, forging a community within the space of the
gallery. Considered together, the artists in ŒSocial Capital‚ present
various models of human interaction, encouraging viewers to reflect
critically on their own positions within different social networks.
It can be viewed at CUNY Graduate Center (365 Fifth Avenue @34thstreet)
