1. about this Saturday 03.31.07
What: Talk / Discussion
When: Monday 03.31.07
Where: 16Beaver Street, 4th Floor
When: 6-9 pm
Who: Free and open to all
We are happy to host Temporary Services, in town for the Group Work book
launch and related exhibition at Printed Matter, for a dinner and informal
conversation to celebrate groups. Temporary Services will offer a short
presentation of their work and their new book, Group Work. They will be
joined by Alan Moore, himself no stranger to working in groups. Alan will
be in conversation with Temporary Services about the book and their work,
and will help lead an open discussion with the public.
Also, we’ll be enjoying potluck dinner and drinks throughout the evening.
Please bring a dish or drink to share. We’re hoping to see a bunch of
people who currently work in groups as well as people who appreciate group
work.

2. about Temporary Services
Temporary Services is a group of three persons: Brett Bloom, Salem
Collo-Julin and Marc Fischer. They draw on their varied backgrounds and
interests to produce creative exhibitions, events, projects and
publications. They often collaborate with others outside of their group.
The members of Temporary Services are also three of the thirteen
keyholders of Mess Hall, an experimental cultural center in Chicago. Two
components of their work that have been constant since their inception in
1998 are their love of self-publishing and their commitment to finding
diverse placements and audiences for their projects. Temporary Services
strives toward aesthetic experiences that are built upon trust and
unlimited experimentation.

3. about Group Work – the book
Printed Matter has published Group Work, Temporary Services’ latest book!
It’s an array of interviews and writings about groups ˆ how they form,
what they do, and why they work in this manner.
Temporary Services talked to some inspiring and fantastic groups and
people for this publication, including General Idea’s AA Bronson, the art
group Haha, the Dutch band The Ex, the Vienna-based WochenKlausur,
Croatian curatorial collective What, How & for Whom (WHW), Funkadelic
artist Pedro Bell, and several members of the Political Art
Documentation/Distribution collective.
There are also writings about Jane (the underground abortion counseling
service of the Chicago Women’s Liberation Union in the 1960s) and The
Diggers. A list of words used to describe groups and a working list of
hundreds of groups from the last four decades is also included.
The cover is itself a group work! Esteban Garcia and Nick Martin, who
Temporary Services met at a workshop at Purdue University, formed a new
collaboration in order to create the amazing cover art ˆ a constellation
of crystals, black, gray, and hot pink.
Printed Matter is selling the book both at their store and at
www.printedmatter.org.
