What: Hacia un ruido/It Made a Noise — Noise Poetry Reading by María
Salgado and Fran MM Cabeza de Vaca

As the worldly struggles for, against, toward, in the name of …. , you
see, that’s just it. The words, the names you give things, we give things,
the language, its hard to find the words, we struggle with and through and
in language, against language, and there is a struggle not just over the
finance, the moneyed imagination, and not just the words, but also the use
of the words.
And in this way, Madrid-based poet María Salgado and musician Fran MM
Cabeza de Vaca visit to New York is fortuitous. They are here in NYC for
just a few days presenting their collaborative work and we thought this
was an exceptional occasion to organize a performance at 16 Beaver.
Their experimental sound/poetry emerges as some kind of noise from these
last three years of convulsion in Madrid. María and Fran are involved in
the growing Spanish scene of social centers, free culture, and grass roots
autonomous activism, participating in projects like Seminario Euraca,
Ladyfest, and Zemos98. Their work erupts in the middle of the violence of
neoliberalism and the precarious, exuberant, and persistent collective
efforts to build a world, or worlds amid the ruin or ruins.
This is how María describes the performance:
“I’ll be performing with an electroaocustic music composer called Fran MM
Cabeza de Vaca, with whom I have been working for a year now. We’ll try to
do some inverted rap (?) (beats follow/chase voice instead of the other
way round), some poetry without poet (jewelry & junk jewelry language
taken from different sources), a piece of spoken-text … and a few little
poems. Romance-Languageish translations, raw-googletranslator translations
and beautiful perfect translations made by the poet Elia Maqueda will be
screened so spanish won’t become a problem but a pleasant challenge.”

1. Bios
María Salgado has recited in numerous spaces of creation inside and out of
Madrid as the theatre Pradillo (La Más Bella revista, 2011), the Festival
de Poesía Barcelona (2011), the Casa de América (2011 poetas por km2), the
Museo de la Universidad de Alicante (2012), the Meetings AVLAB of
Medialab-Prado (2008) or the bookshop Rayuela of Berlin (2008).
Her project of poetical investigation is conceived from three fundamental
axes: the critical investigation in the field of the contemporary poetics,
the poetical creation and the activation of spaces of edition, diffusion
and exchange like the project Contrabando or the cycle of distant recitals
not different from the reading Zírculo Inestable de Tiza. She has lived in
Buenos Aires, New York and Philadelphia. In the latter city she took part
of the seminar of doctorate directed by poet Charles Bernstein and the
activities of the Kelly Writer’s House, head office of the sonorous file
Pennsound.
Fran MM Cabeza de Vaca is a composer. He has premiered instrumental and
electro-acoustic music in several Spanish festivals as well as
international festival (Mérida Festival in México, Oxford Festival in
Canada, Foro Internacional de Música Nueva in DF, Le bruit de la musique
in France). He has participated as a composer and musician in several
stage performances, collaborating with choreographers such as Muchelle
Man, Guillermo Weickert, Fernando Lima or María Cabeza de Vaca. Among
other audiovisual works, three documentary feature films with José Luis
Tirando can be highlighted (among them, the documentary opera Paisaje de
Retroprogreso), the original soundtrack for Carmina y Amén, directed by
Paco León, as well as his permanent active participation in the
audiovisual collective ZEMOS 98. He also directed the stage performance
Veo una Voz, with actress Ana Barcia, and the experimental opera Todos
Caníbales with the Nou Ensemble and artists Christian Fernández Mirón and
Roberto Martínez.
