Camp Casey!
Action Alert!!
All /leftbooks.com/ proceeds from now until
Saturday, August 21st go towards Camp Casey -/ /Ouch!!
One woman after another was thrown off the bus in Montgomery, Alabama
because they dared rest their weary muscles while a white person stood
waiting for their seat. In Jim Crow Montgomery this was a white person’s
birth right. But, one too many insults against Black women turned a stir
into a rolling boil and forced one woman to represent and open up a
struggle that was a powerful spark for the civil rights movement. Her
name was Rosa Parks.
They say that history repeats itself, does it?
One working class woman after another has a son or daughter that gets
killed in U.S. wars for profit year after year. This is decided in the
capitalist Capitol of Washington, DC, where the giant monopoly owners
are the real decision makers of life, death and war – it is their birth
right. But, one too many deaths of a woman’s child turned a stir into a
rolling boil, forcing one woman here in the U.S. to represent and open
up a struggle that is becoming a powerful spark for the anti-war
movement. Her name is Cindy Sheehan.
*We’re so inspired by the Parks-like action of Cindy Sheehan that we
want to send all proceeds from now until August 21st to support Camp
Casey. That’s right, every dollar you spend at **/leftbooks.com/
**from now until August 21st goes towards
two things only: 1) our selling costs and 2) Camp Casey – Period!: Not
overhead, salaries, electricity – none of it. Ouch!!
*This is how we’re using the money:
A number of activists from various progressive organizations will be
sponsored by /leftbooks.com/ to head on to
Crawford, Texas to stand with Cindy Sheehan and bring supplies for the
camp.* *Although your money at /leftbooks.com
/ already goes towards building the movement,
these three days make it go even further./*

We got inspired for this email by reading this featured book about the
Montgomery bus boycott. It will inspire you too, and like us, you’ll
want to put your inspiration into action. Check it out!:
The Montgomery Bus Boycott
and the Women Who Started It
The Memoir of Jo Ann Gibson Robinson
Edited, with a foreword, by David J. Garrow
Montgomery Bus Boycott and the Women who Started it – The Memoir of Jo
Ann Gibson Robinson
This year marks the 50th anniversary of the launching of the historic
Montgomery bus boycott.Jo Ann Gibson Robinson would become one of the
most prominent leaders of the boycott. In this 1987 book she talks about
the daily humiliations Black people faced riding the buses.
What was the role of the organizations–especially those involving
women–in this heroic boycott that won an important political concession
from the KKK-like White Citizens Council?
*”This valuable first-hand account of the historic Montgomery Bus
Boycott, written by an important, behind-the-scenes organizer, evokes
the emotional intensity of the civil rights struggle. It ought to be
required reading for all Americans who value their freedom and the
contribution of Black women to our history.”

Arlington West (DVD)
(The film that helped inspire Cindy Sheehan)
//

This film is a riveting visit to a sea of crosses on the beaches of
California and other locations around the U.S. Each cross symbolizes a
fallen U.S. GI. This powerful protest is recreated every Sunday by the
Veterans For Peace. The number of crosses increases as the weeks go by.
A sign also entreats passersby to contemplate the Iraqi civilians, “If
we were to honor the Iraqi dead, it would fill this entire beach.”
The crosses provide an eloquent stage for compelling dialogue with
military families, veterans, soldiers going to and from Baghdad, and
children.
This film is an excellent tool for discussions, meetings and classrooms
to de-mystify the “glories of war.”
For the living, this film asks, “How could this have happened?” For the
dead, it asks, “Why?”

*Poison DUst (DVD)*
*Directed and Edited by Sue Harris and the Peoples Video Network*
Poison Dust
/”I have seen the impact of this new poison [Depleted Uranium] when I
visited wards for young children in Iraq. Amidst the overwhelming
horrors of the bombings and the starvation caused by sanctions, the
doctors at first did not notice the huge rise in the numbers of
childhood cancers, such as leukemia, Hodgkin’s disease and lymphomas …
The United States and Britain used so much DU in weapons during the Gulf
War that 350 tons of residue permeate the ground and water, and will
contaminate the entire region for generations.”/
*- Ramsey Clark, former U.S. Attorney General*
You thought they came home safely from the war. They didn’t. Poison DUst
tells the story of three young men from New York who could not get
answers for their mysterious ailments after their National Guard unit’s
2002 tour of duty in Iraq. A mother reveals her fears about the extent
of her child’s birth defects and the growing disability of her young
husband – a vet. Filmmaker Sue Harris skillfully weaves, through
interviews, their journey from personal trauma, to test results for
uranium poisoning, to learning what radioactive Depleted Uranium weapons
are. Their frustrations in dealing with the Veterans Administration’s
silence becomes outrage as they realize that thousands of other GI’s
have the same symptoms. An invaluable resource for all of us. **

**Trans Liberation: Beyond Pink or Blue***

Trans Liberation: Beyond Pink and Blue by Leslie Feinberg

/*/Trans Liberation/*/* is an inspiring collection of speeches and new
writings from Leslie Feinberg, author of //Stone Butch Blues// and
//Transgender Warriors// and winner of the ALA Gay and Lesbian
Literature Award and the 1997 Firecracker Alternative Book Award for
Non-Fiction*
More exists among human beings than can be answered by the simplistic
question I’m hit with every day of my life: “Are you a man or a woman?”
Trans Liberation is the phrase that has come to refer to all those who
blur or bridge the boundary of the sex or gender expression they were
assigned at birth: cross-dressers, transsexuals, intersex people, Two
Spirits, bearded females, masculine females and feminine males, drag
kings and drag queens. In this inspiring collective of speeches and new
writing, **Leslie Feinberg** argues passionately for the acceptance of
all trans peoples–and for the absolute necessity of building coalitions
between all progressive political groups.
Topics include the similarities among trans, bi, gay and lesbian
communities in their struggles to break down the closet doors of shame
and silence, Feinberg’s passionate arguments for the acceptance of all
trans peoples, and for the necessity of building coalitions between all
progressive political groups, and with self-portraits by Gary Bowen,
Cheryl Chase, Michael Hernandez, Craig Hickman, William (Peaches) Mason,
Linda Phillips, Cynthia Phillips, Sylvia Rivera, Deirdre Sinnott (Al
Dente), and Dragon Xcalibur.

**Chavez, Venezuela and the New Latin America (DVD)**
**by Aleida Guevara**
Chavez, Venezuela and the New Latin America – by Aleida Guevara

In February 2004 Aleida Guevara, daughter of Che Guevara, conducted an
extended, exclusive interview with Hugo Chavez, president of the
Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, exploring Venezuela’s explosive
revolutionary terrain post-April 2002 – when Chavez survived a coup
attempt instigated by the United States. Featuring a dramatic interview
with Jorge Garcia Carneiro, newly appointed head of the Venezuelan Armed
Forces, and vox-pops with Venezuelans involved in the country’s many
social programs, this film affords a rare opportunity to glimpse through
the blockade of information imposed by the United States and into a
country rich with hope, dreams and…oil.
